Comment se prémunir de l’infobésité

L’infobésité, ou la surcharge d’informations numériques, nécessite une prise de distance, au risque de s’exposer au burnout ! Aujourd’hui, les neurosciences sont formelles : le cerveau humain, quel qu’il soit, n’est pas multitâche, s’épuise et perd en efficacité. Comment remédier à l’invasion des messages professionnels et… personnels ? Caroline Cuny, enseignant-chercheur à Grenoble Ecole de Management prodigue ses recommandations. 

L’infobésité se caractérise par la surcharge d’informations numériques, reçues par notre mental, à tous moments : au travail, dans sa vie personnelle, lors des loisirs… Voire même… la nuit, pour ceux qui relèvent leurs messages lors d’une phase d’insomnie, ou au réveil, tôt le matin. « Il est important d’avoir en tête que notre système cognitif traite certaines données de façon consciente ET inconsciente.

Et lorsque l’individu est exposé à un afflux d’informations, vis-à-vis desquelles il se met en posture de devoir réagir, le mental est menacé, souligne Caroline Cuny, titulaire d’une thèse en psychologie cognitive. Car, de fait, le traitement continu et permanent de l’information digitale nous place dans l’illusion de l’attention. Le cerveau humain n’est pas multitâche. Le « zapping » appauvrit en réalité nos capacités, et nous épuise ».

Les messages à contenu cognitif et émotionnel sont sources de stress 

Parmi l’afflux d’informations reçues, les messages émanant de responsables hiérarchiques ou de clients, à fort contenu (car porteurs d’une exigence), véhiculent une charge émotionnelle, et sont donc sources de stress. « Souvent, l’on pense être en capacité de traiter ces messages sur un mode quasi « automatique ». En réalité, c’est une impression : ces informations, en particulier, doivent inviter à la prise de distance ».

Par ailleurs, qui n’a pas expérimenté de répondre à un message urgent, en réunion, pensant suivre à la fois le contenu exhaustif des propos, tout en croyant répondre de façon ajustée… ? « C’est un leurre, rappelle Caroline Cuny. Des informations importantes sont omises, et la réponse trop rapide au mail n’est pas forcément adaptée. L’immédiateté nous met sous pression. C’est une source de stress inutile et, par-dessus-tout, une source d’erreurs. Vigilance donc. Apprenons à prioriser les informations !

Les préconisations

1- S’or-ga-ni-ser !

  • Déterminer, au préalable, des canaux de communication différents selon ses interlocuteurs.  Les SMS seront utilisés par les membres de sa famille (en cas d’urgence) ; le téléphone sera réservé à son supérieur hiérarchique ; l’e-mail se dédié aux clients ; alors que les collègues toqueront à la porte.
  • Traiter ses mails de façon séquentielle et proactive : consacrer un temps calibré, plusieurs fois dans la journée, pour traiter ses e-mails – et uniquement.
  • Conserver une vision globale : prioriser le degré « d’urgence » des messages. Cela nécessite un temps d’arrêt pour hiérarchiser l’information et y allouer plus ou moins d’efforts de traitement.

2- Limiter, voire proscrire toutes interruptions d’attention (vraie)

  • Gérer sa boite mail en désactivant les notifications ou les alertes sur son ordinateur et son smartphone.
  • Pratiquer « l’art du compromis » : accepter de ne pas traiter certains e-mails, ou de ne pas les traiter tout de suite – et informer en amont ses interlocuteurs de votre posture.

3- Lutter contre l’impératif d’immédiateté 

  • Se ménager des temps de pause est fondamental, au risque d’être confronté au burnout (épuisement cognitif), lié à la surcharge mentale. Et ce, du jour au lendemain. Les signes précurseurs ? Ne plus être en capacité de « partager » avec ses proches par exemple sur les informations agréables.

Un guide de bonnes pratiques

La chaire des Talents de la transformation digitale, à Grenoble Ecole de Management, amorce un travail de recherche, en janvier, qui permettra de caractériser les différents types de pauses, les plus bénéfiques (telle, la pratique du sudoku, des mots croisés, du jardinage ou du tricot, reconnus comme très propices), pour se ressourcer face aux sollicitations numériques. A la clé, l’édition d’un guide de bonnes pratiques au premier semestre 2017. Ce travail sera conduit avec Gaël Allain, spécialiste de la psychologie cognitive, co-fondateur et co-dirigeant de la start-up « My Mental Training », qui a développé une application permettant de gérer sa charge mentale, via des exercices de visualisation.
