Dans les entrailles de Pokémon Go

De l’utilisation abusive des datas collectées  à la constitution d’un algorithme capable de prédire le comportement des utilisateurs, Nathalie Devillier met en lumière l’opacité de l’application Pokémon Go. Une technologie qui attise les convoitises.

Recette magique qui permet de passer de la data au business, l’algorithme est le secret de fabrique convoité par le personnage de Mark Zuckerberg dans The Social Network interpellant le président du club d’échec d’Harvard : « Comment classes-tu tes joueurs ? Quel est ton algorithme ? Il me faut ton algorithme ! » Autant dire que c’est la corde sensible pour Niantic : mettre en lumière les entrailles de l’application Pokémon Go la positionne comme un élément d’une architecture plus grande au croisement des ambitions de Google et Facebook.

Un « partage » opaque et à sens unique

Dans mon précédent article j’ai décortiqué le fonctionnement de l’application pour attirer l’attention des dresseurs sur le vol de leurs données personnelles auquel ils ont consenti « à l’insu de leur plein gré » en cliquant sur « Installer ».

Ce « partage » des données opéré par Niantic via le compte Gmail ou Facebook du dresseur rappelle le leitmotiv de Mark Zuckerberg, mais il s’agit en fait d’un droit de préemption sur vos données. L’opacité des Conditions d’utilisation du service et de la Politique de confidentialité créée un flou total autour de l’utilisation de ces data. Officiellement, il s’agit d’améliorer le service. En réalité, l’application génère des données agrégées non identifiantes, mais on ne dit pas comment elles sont anonymisées (Politique de confidentialité, art.2-c).

Le sénateur américain Al Franken a utilisé cette constatation pour saisir la Commission Fédérale du Commerce (FTC) d’une demande d’enquête sur Niantic. La FTC a en effet pris l’habitude de scruter les terms of service et privacy policy pour y déceler un usage abusif des big data, une clause abusive telle que la suppression de l’action de groupe et son remplacement par un avis d’arbitrage (c’est le cas aussi pour Pokémon Go). Affaire à suivre donc.

Un algorithme prédictif dans une prospective futuriste ou hégémonique ?

L’algorithme derrière le jeu est basé sur une intelligence humaine. Il est donc en premier lieu tributaire des préoccupations qui animent leur fondateur. Or, le lourd passif de John Hanke (CEO de Niantic), créateur de Google Earth au centre du scandale Street View de 2010 combiné à sa passion pour les nanotechnologies, la robotique et l’intelligence artificielle laissent présager l’existence d’un algorithme prédictif. Il serait donc capable, à partir des données collectées massivement par le jeu, de prévoir les déplacements, les centres d’intérêt, les préférences, voire le comportement, les choix, le rendement professionnel, la situation économique, l’état de santé des dresseurs !

« tirer parti d’un ensemble de données constitué de centaines de millions d’actions par jour de l’utilisateur pour modéliser, analyser et prédire le comportement des utilisateurs non seulement pour créer des expériences de jeu incroyables, mais aider les gens à changer leur vie avec des jeux basés dans le monde réel. »

Convaincu maintenant ? Au passage, cette récolte illimitée de données servirait bien une « société apparentée » à vocation transhumaniste : Calico), dont le but est ni plus ni moins de… tuer la mort !
