Management: Why Become a Business Coach?

Improve managerial skills and techniques, teach how to manage conflicts, learn self-control… For the past ten years, Grenoble Ecole de Management has offered managers, consultants, trainers and HR employees a training program for individual and group coaching.

What are the benefits of becoming a management coach?

This certificate in individual and group coaching aims enables participants to support teams and individuals as they develop their relationship skills. Coaching provides economic and social benefits by helping managers develop their capacity to listen, communicate and interact with others. These skills are essential to reinforce a manager's role as leaders who can accompany change.

"Company coaching is not about individual or group therapy. A coach enables managers to take a step back in precise situations. The coach helps managers meet individual, professional and organizational goals," explains Jocelyne Deglaine, who trains individuals, managers, teams and organizations to implement cultural and relationship changes.

Jocelyne is a consultant and associate professor at Grenoble Ecole de Management. She is specialized in human resource management and personal development as well as being certified C&T11. She is deputy head of the Grenoble Ecole de Management Institute for Organizational Agility and helps lead training for professionals and students.

Well-being and performance

"In a company, a coach's mission is to meet clear objectives that have been defined according to an existing professional environment. The goal is to get everyone to work better together. To do so, you have to improve soft skills," highlights Jocelyn. The process is a collective one in which each individual contributes at his or her level. The ambition is to rebuild interactions that foster well-being and performance in the organization.

As a result, part of the coach's task is to open a manager's eyes in terms of his or her position within a team. This will enable a manager to adopt better behavior. "The idea is to offer easily understood representations and models that help participants analyze concrete management situations," adds Jocelyne.

Team coaching is also a plus for new projects and organizations in order to encourage team members to delegate and appreciate each member's skillset. It also enables teams to understand dysfunctional relationships and organizational methods as well as cope with conflicts.

Avoid being blindsided

The coach's audience is managers who wish to develop another perspective on their role and responsibilities in order to improve their abilities as managers. The coach can help HR implement and support change or a variety of other actors such as project leaders, consultants, experts or trainers who wish to improve their interpersonal relationships.

Another example would be psychologists who wish to improve their interactions with other professionals. "The coach is really here to help connect people and avoid blind spots," concludes Jocelyn.

Two levels of certification

The first level of certification enables participants to learn the foundations of coaching. These skills focus on how to support and coach a person in order to help develop their awareness.

The second level of certification  enables participants to expand their coaching skills by integrating the concept of agility. This certificate provides several themes through which to develop your coaching (context, current situations, working together to develop positive relationships, decreasing tension, managing stress, and encouraging cooperation or creativity). This certificate integrates fundamental human characteristics as a means to foster long term performance.
