Objectives

Today an energy revolution is underway: new technical possibilities combined with changing customers' demands and evolving political regulations are deeply changing the energy landscape. GEM designed this interactive course specifically for managers and engineers to understand the deep transformation that the energy sector is going through and to be able to make strategic decisions in a continuously changing energy market. This course is offered in partnership with EIT-KIC InnoEnergy, the European company for innovation, business creation and education in sustainable energy.

Profile of participants

PhD students or engineers in the energy field who want to deepen their knowledge about the energy sector and better assess the economic potential of the technology/service they are working on. Early career engineers and managers who want to acquire the state-of-the-art transversal knowledge about the energy sector needed to advance in their career.

Program

This course addresses five topics:

Fossil energy: trends and challenges

  • Learn about the size and evolution of global oil, gas and coal markets
  • Understand the energy questions the world face and the main risks triggered by the instability of the energy geopolitics.
  • Gain insight into the gas value system and into how the changing energy landscape influences the global gas business

Investment in Energy Sector

  • Learn about global investment needs in renewable, fossil and nuclear energy
  • Understand how cost of generating is estimated
  • Acquire knowledge about the major drivers of investment in various generating technologies

European Electricity Market

  • Understand the organization of the European electricity market and how it functions
  • Learn about the different ways to trade electricity and the impact for TSOs
  • Grasp how climate policies and EU trading system shapes the European energy landscape

Energy efficiency

  • Develop a basic understanding of the concept of energy efficiency
  • Become acquainted with key energy efficiency policies in the EU
  • Understanding the rationale for dynamic pricing and get exposed to international developments and differences across countries;

Energy Modelling and Energy Scenarios

  • Understand how energy models are built in order to forecast future energy demand
  • Get acquainted with the latest energy scenarios and how they are used for policy making

This program mobilizes faculty members belonging to the Energy Management research team.

Joachim Schleich is a senior professor and holds a PhD from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. His areas of expertise include energy efficiency, energy policy, and climate policy and innovation.
Anne-Lorène Vernay is a post-doc and is responsible for all of GEM’s activities in KIC InnoEnergy. She holds a PhD in innovation studies and industrial ecology from Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. Her expertise includes the local management of waste and energy.
