Objectives

Grenoble Ecole de Management (GEM) Advanced Research Seminars deal with advanced research methodology issues in management and business and aim to facilitate academic work by increasing methodological research skills. These seminars are a paid educational service provided by the GEM Doctoral School. A certificate of attendance is issued at the end of each session.

In addition to offering participants stimulating high-level training, GEM Advanced Research Seminars provide an exceptional environment for participants to interact with each other and discuss their research work. Top-level professors also share their methodological expertise and provide participants with guidance for their research efforts.

GEM Advanced Research Seminars are open seminars. They are designed for scholars as well as GEM and non-GEM students. Executives with specific methodological needs may also attend these seminars. They complement existing doctoral and postdoctoral programs and are a part of the GEM life-long learning process.

The Advanced Research Seminars are designed for doctoral and postdoctoral students, researchers, and professionals who are currently involved in or plan to undertake research.

SPSS REFRESHERS: MODERATION AND MEDIATION ANALYSIS USING REGRESSION

This two-day course is designed for doctoral and postdoctoral students, researchers and professionals who are undertaking quantitative causal research. More specifically, this course deals with moderation and mediation analysis mainly using multiple regression analysis. Moderation analysis refers to the study of interactions while mediation analysis refers to the study of indirect effects. Moderation is used to test whether the effect of X on Y depends on the level of a moderator M. Mediation is used to assess the underlying mechanism of an effect. In this seminar you will learn about the principles and the concrete applications of these methods.

This seminar will start with the study of simple moderation and mediation but will also deal with the study of multiple moderations (multiple simultaneous 2-way interactions and 3-way interactions) and multiple mediations (serial or parallel) as well as with models integrating both moderation and mediation (e.g. mediated moderation). Besides model with only continuous variables, the seminar will also cover moderation and mediation analysis with multicategorical independent variables (e.g. an independent variable with 3 levels). We will also cover contrast coding for categorical variables. Finally, the seminar will cover moderation and mediation analyses when the dependent variable is a dichotomous variable (using logistic regression).

A high level of quantitative knowledge is not required, but some familiarity with basic statistical techniques, such as multiple regression and statistical inference, is assumed. The software used for the seminar is SPSS as well as the PROCESS add on developed by Hayes (2013). You will actually learn how to go beyond the models listed in the documentation of PROCESS.

The presentation of topics will be conceptually rather than mathematically oriented, and numerous examples of the application of moderation and mediation to different kinds of research problems will be considered.

Using a combination of lecture sessions, pre-readings, practical in-class exercises and group discussions, this Advanced Research Seminar is an exceptional space to gain hands on experience on the latest methods of moderation and mediation analysis.

Participants will also receive guidance and methodological assistance for their specific research queries. You are encouraged to bring your own data to apply what you’ve learned.

Qualitative Research and NVIVO

This two-day course is designed for doctoral and postdoctoral students, researchers, and professionals who are planning to undertake or manage qualitative research using NVivo software or who have already collected qualitative data but are not sure how to analyze it.

Prerequisite training or demonstrated basic skills in qualitative data collection and analysis are required for fully participating in the course (e.g. DBA workshops on Qualitative Data Collection).

Using a combination of presentations, practical workshops and group discussions, this Advanced Research Seminar is an exceptional space for participants to interact with a top-level professor.

Students will receive guidance and methodological assistance for their specific research queries.
